Start With the Kind of Rain You Hike In
A rain jacket for occasional showers does not need the same construction as one meant for long days in steady rain. Think about your usual conditions before comparing features.
If you hike mostly in warm climates with passing storms, prioritize low weight, ventilation, and a jacket that packs down easily. You may wear it for only 20 minutes at a time, then stash it in a daypack. In colder, windier areas, a more protective shell with a better hood and room for layers is often worth carrying.
Backpackers should also consider repeated use. A jacket that feels fine on a two-mile walk can become frustrating after several hours of rain, shoulder-strap pressure, and constant movement. For multi-day trips, durability and fit matter as much as listed waterproof performance.

Do not expect a shell to work like an air conditioner. In humid summer rain, sweat may still build up inside any jacket. The goal is to manage moisture well enough that you stay comfortable and avoid chilling when you slow down.
A Hiking Rain Jacket Needs a Trail-Ready Fit
Try on a rain jacket the way you plan to wear it. If you hike in cool conditions, put a fleece or insulated midlayer underneath. Raise your arms, reach forward as if using trekking poles, and pull the hood up. The shoulders should not bind, and the hem should not ride high enough to expose your lower back.
A trim fit reduces loose fabric and packs smaller, but it can limit layering. Care Keeps a Rain Jacket Working Longer
Mud, body oils, camp smoke, and sunscreen can reduce breathability and cause water to stop beading on the outer fabric. That does not always mean the waterproof membrane has failed. Often, the jacket needs a proper wash and a renewed durable water repellent finish.
Follow the care label. In many cases, a technical garment wash without regular detergent or fabric softener is the safest approach. Fabric softener can leave residue that interferes with performance.
